Four Tips To Better Driving

One of the more penalising and dreaded shots in golf is hitting a driver off the tee. Eradication of competition cards can be due to the inconsistency of tee shots. In my opinion, it is an essential part of the game as it sets up the hole every time; hitting the fairways on a regular basis can ease the second shot and put you in a better stand to improve scores.

As a rule, i work on four important concepts with my customers to improve their overall driving statistics, including straighter and longer drives.

Tee It High

Teeing the ball higher, will encourage the strike higher up the clubface, which is a secret key to lowering spin rates. Secondly, it will produce a higher launch angle for more carry distance.

Widened Stance

The second area for improved driving is widening the stance. Balance and stability comes from the ground up. A stable base will produce a frame able of creating a good shoulder turn and kinematic movement for maximum power and clubhead speed.

Shoulder's Pointing To The Sky & Weight Further To The Back Foot

Having the shoulders pointing to the sky, will encourage you to hit more up on the ball, producing a shallower angle of approach. This is essential when hitting a driver, for optimum launch angle and lower spin rates. This will benefit players who often slice the ball off the tee.

The next point i work on is to have more weight on the back foot (Right foot for right handers & left foot for left handers). I encourage my customers to keep the weight on their back foot till just after impact to ensure a positive angle of attack. One thing this will increase is the mobility when turning and coiling during the backswing which will again produce more clubhead speed for more distance.

So next time you're on the course or driving range, just remember;

1. Tee it High.

2. Widened Stance.

3. Shoulder Plane To The Sky.

4. Weight Back & Stay Behind It Through Impact.
