Hole More Putts From A Consistent Set Up.

Putting is a highly overlooked area of the game considering it counts for a huge portion of your score and is the most used club in the bag. I see many players with bad faults in their stroke due to inconsistent flaws in their set up position.

I have highlighted several areas where i believe you will see considerable differences and improved scores from less putts per round.

1. Let the hands hang in front of the shoulders.

We need to make the body as comfortable as possible while at set up. When you stand up straight and the arms hang naturally, your hands will sit in front of the shoulders.

This links directly into the second part.

2. More room for the arms to hang naturally.

Give yourself more room for the arms to hang in a natural position down from the shoulders. This will enable your shoulders to rock in a pendulum motion to decrease the amount of hand movement for ultimate clubface control. The old unwritten rule of putting was to have the eyeline over the golf ball, but i feel having the eyeline inside the ball will enable more room for the shoulders to rock and also promote a natural arc to the stroke.

3. Grip more in the palm.

Gripping the putter more in the palm will reduce the amount of movement in the hands due to the shaft plane sitting in a steeper position. Feel like the butt of the grip will point towards the inside of the elbow joint.

4. Lead hand low grip.

Place your hand closest to the hole at the top of the grip and the other hand below in a position that feels comfortable to you. This will make the shoulder plane parallel to the ground; The best way to ensure a consistent and true roll off the putter face is to strike the ball at the optimum point in the arc and i believe squaring the shoulder plane gives you the best chance to do this by creating a better pendulum stroke. Remember, we want to maintain the upmost control over the putter face, so dont be afraid to grip the putter tighter than with the other clubs in the bag.

Give these 4 steps a try and let me know what you think. I'm always interested in knowing your thoughts and experiences of my work, so i can improve my own personal knowledge and provide you with better content.
