Improve Launch Characteristics With Your Driver

Many players I teach struggle to get the required launch when hitting their driver. Launch is dependant on your dynamic loft (the loft you present to the ball at impact) and angle of attack. Although there are other parameters that can improve your launch conditions, i believe these two are the most important.

Changing your angle of attack and hitting more "up" on the ball will in turn increase your dynamic loft, unless you have a very late release like many of the great players. Below is a fantastic drill I use day in day out during my sessions and have seen some great results. Place a golf ball box a club heads width in front or target side of the ball (if this is proving difficult, use a grips length). Ensure your ball is teed up nice and high. The purpose of this drill is for you to hit up on the ball and sweep it off the tee; if you continue to hit the box, you will still be hitting the ball on the way down and launching the ball too low. It provides great feedback to you without having your coach there to tell you if you're doing right or wrong.

In order to help you do this, i would recommend changing two pre-swing principles for better results. Firstly, make sure your ball position is forward, near your left heel. This isn't an exact position, but will only help to increase your angle of attack. Secondly, get a slight tilt of your upper body behind the ball, this again will mean your shoulders are aligned to the sky encouraging a sweeping motion at impact.

Give all of these things a go and you should see improvements in your driving straight away. Once again, let me know how you get on so i can continue to make useful content for my viewers.
