My Number One Drill To Improve Your Chipping

The number one fault i see from amatuers while chipping, is them trying to help the ball into the air or "scoop" it. This can be caused by a number of setup characteristics:

1. Weight distribution 50/50- As you can see in the image below, my weight is distributed 75% on my left side; this is so we can encourage the club to decend in a downwards motion, creating a steeper "angle of attack".

2. Ball position central- Having the ball position in the middle of your stance while chipping makes it very difficult for you to create a consistent strike of ball followed by turf. Move your ball position back inside your right heel and lean the handle slightly forward and you will see improved ball striking.

Once you have these two setup characteristics mastered, i recommend that you try the following drill:

Place a towel on the ground around 4-5 inches behind the golf ball. (As shown below). Your task with this particular drill, is to focus on missing the towel on the way down; if you do so, you'll be creating that desired angle of attack which is so key when chipping. If you try to "scoop" the ball, the club will make contact with the towel and you personally will recieve negative feedback without the assistance of your coach being there.

Give this drill a try and let me know how you get on. "Let the loft do the work".
